What is New Wave?

French New Wave - La Nouvelle Vague

The French New Wave (La Nouvelle Vague) was a group of trailblazing directors who exploded onto the film scene in the late 1950s; revolutionising cinematic conventions. With an emphasis on invigorating cinematic narrative, French New Wave rejected traditional linear tropes of storytelling and created a new language of film, and became a vibrant influence on international cinema which is still being felt today. The French New Wave has been described as an artistic movement that had a profound influence upon film and cinema, renowned for "blurring the lines between art and reality", giving birth to the Auteur and evoking the rise of the 'camera-stylo' style.
